Mastering English with The Straits Times:  The Secondary Edition (2E) is a workbook which

This is the second edition of Mastering English with The Straits Times: The Secondary Edition. Like the first edition, launched in 2017, it is based on the latest O-level English examination format and is aligned with the English syllabus issued by the Ministry of Education, Singapore.

 With completely new content, it provides more of what the first edition was valued for – excellent guided practice, The Straits Times articles and photographs, and sound tips, to help students prepare for and be better equipped to manage the various components in the O-level English examinations.

The first edition of Mastering English with The Straits Times: The Secondary Edition won the Best Education Title award at the Singapore Book Awards in 2018. It has, to date, sold more than 12,900 copies.


The book comprises five main components: 

  1. Oral practice (10 exercises)
    These exercises are designed to expose students to various topics as well as to build vocabulary and knowledge of current affairs.
  2. Paper one practice – Editing (6 exercises)
    The editing passages from The Straits Times as well as tips given will provide additional practice for students aiming to score in this section of the paper.

  3. Paper one practice – Essay (8 exercises)
    Students will be able to use The Straits Times’ photographs in order to craft better essays. The rich ideas and tips given will enable them to explore writing techniques and curate sound content to score for this section of the examination.

  4. Paper two practice – Situational writing (9 exercises)
    The exercises in this component aim to equip students with knowledge about authentic application of the writing contexts, as well as a variety of situations and formats to practise on.
